If you live around Lake James, you already know the rhythm of a July weekend here. What you may not know is how many of the small pieces have shifted since last summer. A trail loop you did in 2024 has a detour now. A restaurant you drove past for years just changed hands. The state park's busiest connector is finally open again after Helene knocked it out. This is a walk through what's changed, what's stayed, and where to point your out-of-town cousins when they show up unannounced in August.
The short version of the thesis: the summer map around this lake looks different in 2026 than it did in 2024, and most of the changes reward locals who know the workaround.
The trail map is not the trail map you remember
Lake James State Park still lists roughly 25 miles of trail across the Catawba River and Paddy's Creek accesses, with about 15 of those miles open to mountain bikes and the Holly Discovery, Overmountain Victory, and Fonta Flora trails threaded through. Two things have changed underneath that top line.
First, the East Wimba Trail is on long-term closure because of Hurricane Helene damage. If you had it in your rotation, it is not coming back this season.
Second, the Fonta Flora State Trail, the twenty-mile hike-and-bike ribbon that eventually will wrap the whole lake, is in the middle of a construction detour. Duke Energy broke ground in October 2025 on a new Fonta Flora Access Area, and the reroute is in place through the end of 2026. The detour is half a mile long, marked with a red diamond blaze, and you can still make the loop. You can also still walk out 0.4 miles in each direction toward the construction zone for the lake views that made that stretch famous, then double back to the blaze.
When the access area opens, it will add a motorized boat launch, a courtesy dock, parking, restrooms, and a finished section of Fonta Flora Trail, maintained through a partnership among Duke Energy, Burke County, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. For anyone who has been on the wait list for a slip somewhere, another public ramp on this lake is not a small thing.
A third piece of news that has flown under the radar: the Mountains-to-Sea Connector from Fish Hatchery Road to Wolf Pit Road reopened in September 2025 after a forest restoration project. The stretch from Wolf Pit to the Linville River access, however, is still storm-damaged along NC 126, and Burke County is asking hikers to bypass that section until repairs are done. In other words, the trail is open, but the smart local route this summer starts at the state park side and works east.
Heads up before you plan a weekend: Burke County has been under Level 2 Mandatory Water Restrictions as of late June 2026. If you are hosting family at a rental, that changes what you can and cannot do with irrigation and outdoor washing.
Where the weekend actually eats
The dining picture around the lake has quietly diversified. Not all of these places are new, but the mix is what matters for someone rotating through a summer's worth of visitors.

A note on Fonta Flora Brewery, since it comes up in almost every summer conversation about the lake: this is the same operation that supplies the beer and wine for the state park's Ice Festival, which in 2026 was themed around Fonta Flora and Whippoorwill Dairy. That festival, along with the food trucks that rotate through it, is a good reminder of who the anchor food-and-drink businesses actually are on this side of the lake. When Appalachian Chic's Southern Experience, Cactus Rainbow, Carolina Catfish, and Pietro's Wood Fired Pizza show up at park events, those are the trucks worth following on off weekends too.
What's opening, what's moving
A few concrete changes to put on your radar for the back half of 2026:
- Copper Penny Grill is coming to Marion. The group behind the Lake Hickory, Forest City, and Rutherfordton locations is targeting a fall 2026 opening at 700 E. Court St., with owner Shelly Gref telling one trade publication the aim is October or November. For Lake James residents who currently drive to Hickory for that menu, the trip is about to get shorter.
- Powermaxx of Marion is relocating to East Court Street into the former Oldsmobile dealership building, right next to the incoming Copper Penny. It is not a restaurant story, but it is a downtown-Marion story, and it explains why that stretch is going to feel different by winter.
- Grounded Coffee Shop & Deli at 263 Barnes Road inside Nebo Crossing is worth knowing about if you are doing an early trail day. It runs 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, uses locally roasted beans from Ingenious Coffee Roasters, and is open to anyone, not just church members.
- The Fonta Flora Access Area itself is the biggest medium-term change. When it opens, the lake gains a new public motorized launch, which matters for how crowded the existing Catawba River and Paddy's Creek ramps feel on peak Saturdays.
A weekend, built around what is actually open
For anyone reading this because your in-laws just texted that they are driving up Friday, here is a working template based on what is open right now.
- Friday evening. Dinner at Blanton House in Marion if the occasion calls for it, or Roma if it is a Little League kind of night. Sunset from the Paddy's Creek swim beach, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 through September 30.
- Saturday morning. Coffee at Grounded, then the Fonta Flora Trail Loop from the Fonta Flora County Park access. Expect the red diamond detour, expect mountain bikes on the straightaways, and know the port-a-jon at the gravel lot is your only bathroom until the seasonal facilities come back.
- Saturday afternoon. Lunch at Bear Creek Marina if you are on the water, Fonta Flora Brewery if you are not.
- Sunday. South Creek Vineyards for a slow start, or a paddle from Catawba River access to one of the boat-in campsites on Long Arm Peninsula if your guests are the ambitious type. Long Arm is open, but check the status before you go, since portions of the storm-affected sections may still be closed.
The point is not that any single one of these things is new. It is that the shape of a well-planned Lake James weekend in July 2026 is meaningfully different from the same weekend two summers ago. The trail you defaulted to might be detoured. The restaurant you would have driven forty minutes for is about to be down the road. The launch you queued at may have a sibling by next year.
